Veeam Backup for MS Office 365 v4.0 is here…

office365logoFor those of you waiting for the new version of Veeam Backup for MS Office 365, Christmas has arrived early. Veeam Software has just released their new version today, 26th of November. On this blog, I will discuss the new features and enhancements introduced in this version.

Veeam Backup for MS Office 365, (VBO 365) version 4.0 has come at a great time after my earlier blog post about sizing your VBO infrastructure and backup storage.

Anyway, whether you are new to VBO 365, or a long time user, I am going to go through the new and most important features and enhancements introduced on version 4.0. I am excited about it, and hope you will be too. Let’s start:

  • Object storage support: Now you can backup your MS Office 365 data to object storage as S3 Compatible, Amazon AWS S3, Microsoft Azure Blob Storage and IBM Cloud Object Storage. You can see the options in the screenshot below.

After you have added object storage to the backup infrastructure, you can assign it to a local, or regular, backup repository where the backup data is written directly to the object storage; but, it keeps the metadata on local storage.

  • Encryption at Rest: Out of the box you will have the option to encrypt your backup data stored on the object storage; this is for better security. After you have created your object storage and assigned it to the repository, you can enable the Encryption. Check the following screenshot:

  • Auxiliary backup account: To enhance and speed up the backup performance, version 4.0 introduces the concept of an Auxiliary Backup Account. This feature allows the VBO 365 to use this account to communicate with Microsoft Office 365 to retrieve the data, which in return, speeds up the backup and minimizes the risk of throttling the MS Office 365 account during the backup of OneDrive and SharePoint business items.

To use this feature, you must create an MS Office 365 Security Group using the MS Office 365 Admin Center. From the Admin Center, you assign the group to the Backup Accounts Manager Group.

Note: During the configuration, you must enter the account password.

The features and enhancements I have described for you here on this blog are not the only features you will find in version 4.0. These are, in my opinion, only the most noticeable features you will find after you have completed your deployment or upgrade.

In addition to those features and enhancements I have shown you on this blog, Veeam has also introduced a password management interface for Cloud and encryption passwords, reporting on protected groups, equipment, public and shared mailboxes, and more.

As always, let others know about this blog, and we will have more for you soon.
